The Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, has ordered the immediate arrest of the principal of Tot Secondary School after an educational institution bus was pelted with bullets by bandits.
According to the Kenyan correspondent, the school driver was shot and killed during an attack on the Tot-Err road in Algeyo Maraquet County.
Besides this, two teachers, a man and a woman, are in critical condition after being shot several times, even as the police have started searching for the suspects.
Speaking during an education stakeholders’ event in Nairobi on Friday, 18 February, Matiang’i blamed the school administrator for flouting rules made by the government regarding the use of school buses.
Matiang’i said that the government has made rules that prohibit the use of school buses before 1830 hrs.
“The attack we had on the school bus should not have happened earlier. That school was violating the government policy of taking children beyond 1800hrs. Attack on 2200hrs.
“I have spoken to IG Hillary Mutyambai this morning and we have agreed that we will arrest that principal and prosecute him for public policy violations,” he said.
This was echoed by his education counterpart, George Magoha, who said that the police would confiscate any school bus that is carrying students past the scheduled hours.
During the attack at 2200 hrs, 15 students were injured, while the driver of the bus died on the spot.
Confirming the incident, Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Patrick Lumumba said an investigation had begun to nab the bandits.
“Recovery efforts are on and the students have been taken to various health facilities in Kerio Valley and the seriously injured have been referred to Kapsovar Mission Hospital,” he said.
Lumumba, on the other hand, slammed the school administration for allowing students to use the road despite the recent attacks in the area.
