Kenyan teachers are determined and committed to their work, even though their remuneration is not big enough to earn them some respect like other careers.
This noble act of educating a Kenyan child has enabled Kenya to pursue all kinds of precious careers like medicine, engineering, law etc., for which many young Kenyans fight to earn some special social treatment. They should not forget that teacher is the builder of every career.
In recent days, Kenyan teachers have been faced with the difficult situation of handling some of the students who have so far been rowdy.
Even some teachers have put their lives at risk through attacks and many humiliations by students, about which the commission is also aware, but never did anything.
Recently, there has been a case of intimidation of Kenyan teachers in Mandera related to the Alshabab attacks.
The issue of the safety of Kenyan teachers has always been a priority by teacher unions, and they had to present a proposal to the TSC that teachers should be given a risk allowance that could help manage their welfare in a sudden crisis.
The allowance is in the form of a compensation scheme for the affected teachers both inside and outside the school.
As per special reports, union reports have been submitted to TSC HQ over the years, there is no sign of change in the above allowance.
However, the proposals submitted have now been heard by the commission, and TSC has backed the move as something that will boost the morale of teachers and help them avoid danger zones.
The commission has also written a report to the SRC and a copy to Parliament, requesting more funds to allow them to include risk allowance on teachers’ salaries in the next financial year.
The report explicitly cited some of the issues, including teachers attacking students, terrorists and science chemicals in laboratories that are harmful to Kenyan teachers.
If all goes well, every teacher will smile when they come to the bank, and there will be some increase over what they get as net salary, and every teacher will be attacked at their convenient time and place. The treatment will be ready for use.
