Teachers working on internships can have a reason to smile after Teachers Service Commission, TSC has revealed the date when the newly employed interns will start getting their salary.
Earlier this January, TSC deployed a total of 1,995 intern teachers. TSC also renewed internship contracts for 4,005 teachers, whose one-year tenure ended in December 2021. This took the total number of intern teachers to 6,000.
In September 2021, TSC had advertised 1995 internship positions, where 1038 posts went to primary schools and 957 posts went to primary schools. According to TSC, the recruitment of intern teachers is in support of a government initiative to develop a pool of young talent for the Kenyan labor markets.
The intern recruit missed his January salary. The TSC says that payments for intern teachers are made on a first-to-date basis on the date they are received in their new stations.
Upon receiving intern teachers are required to submit casualties to school heads which will speed up the payment process. Delay in timely submission of Online Casualty Forms affects the payment stipulated commission.
According to TSC sources, intern teachers attached to both primary and secondary schools should expect their salaries for January and February to be paid on Friday, 25, 2022.
Teachers will also have their pay slips available on the TSC T-pay portal to show the total earnings and deductions. Apprentices attached to primary schools receive a monthly stipend of 15,000 shillings while those in secondary schools receive 20,000 shillings.
In January 2021, TSC enrolled 6,000 teachers in the internship program. Interns were given the upper hand in a recent recruitment of 8,000 teachers, when they were awarded up to 30 points, giving them an edge over their competitors.
The lawmakers argued that the decision to give tutors extra marks would be detrimental to the thousands of unemployed teachers, some of whom have had tarmac for more than 10 years.
He said the move was an irregularity and demanded that the education ministry and the TSC’s leadership clarify the rationale behind the decision, which could condemn those employed to further misery.
TSC appoints teachers on the basis of marks, in which teachers with highest scores get a better chance of getting jobs on permanent and pensionable terms.
