The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has already contracted 242,406 teachers to conduct the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
Contracted professionals include center managers (principal and head teachers), supervisors, examiners and security personnel who are charged with conducting national examinations. Speaking in an inter-ministerial address at the Kenya School of Government on Friday, 18 February, TSC Boss, Dr Nancy Macharia, commissioned the teachers have already been made available for assignment by KNEC. “Careful selection of 242,406 teachers to support the 2021 examination process on behalf of TSC (done by KNEC).”
“I want to assure the nation that all the teachers are fully prepared to play their part to ensure that everything goes together throughout the duration of the national examinations.
He said that only the best cream of teachers, who do not have any known disciplinary problems, have been identified as part of the Commission’s determination to guarantee integrity in examination administration.
This year, the commission has identified 242,406 teachers and they will be presented to the Kenya National Examinations Council to serve as supervisors, center managers and examiners during the process. she adds.
Contracted Professionals receive their payment a few days after the official release of KCPE. However, KNEC says it will only pay for those who officially enter their details on the CP2 platform.
There has been a call to increase the payment for the conduct of examinations. A year ago, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) protested and called for a review of the payments.
According to the payment details released by the council, the primary school head who acts as the center manager for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, receives a daily subsistence allowance of 500 shillings; For a total of 4 days (including the rehearsal day).
On the other hand, secondary school principals earn a daily allowance of 500 shillings for 18 days. The highest paid supervisor walks in with a total of 12,510 shillings while the highest paid supervisor gets 9860 shillings
The examiner does not pay the Deputy Principals and Principals despite being present in the school during the examination period as Assistant Center Manager.
KNEC also does not include payment of teachers handling science subjects who do practical preparation and administration during KCSE examinations. However, data from the Kenya National Council of Examinations (KNEC) shows that a total of 2,056,719 were registered for the tests that began in two weeks’ time. In 1,225,693 KCPE and 831,026 KCSE will be seated. KNEC said that the number of candidates appearing in the KCPE examinations has increased by 34,085 as compared to last year. As per the KNEC data, an additional 78,424 candidates have been registered to appear in the KCSE exam.
As per the KNEC report, a total of 479 containers will be used to store the exam material.
