Thousands of primary school teachers are investing heavily and digging deep in their pockets to get higher academic papers.
According to data, Teachers Service Commission, TSC ended automatic promotion for primary and secondary school teachers who upgraded their academic certificates in 2014.
Since 2014, TSC has adopted a more rewarding scheme for teachers. It removed the Schemes of Service (SOS), which guaranteed automatic promotion for teachers pursuing their studies. According to Nancy Macharia the commission is more concerned with the performance of the teacher than just the academic paper. TSC replaced SOS with Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) for teachers.
TSC has repeatedly stated that CPG is better than SOS and it has ended job stagnation for teachers. However, the displeasure of diploma teachers and teachers upgrading their certificates has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the CPG.
The only thing teachers have received from TSC is a thank you note, along with an acknowledgment letter after submitting their certificates. Teachers use their degree certificate only when TSC Advertise for Administrative Promotion Vacancies.
Additionally, for the degree secondary option, the posted teachers should have at least C+ in KCSE and at least C+ in teaching subjects. Commission this financial year (2021 – 2022). TSC said teachers will help support the cent-percent transition from primary to secondary schools.
TSC had advertised 1,000 in 2019 and another 1,000 in September last year. The commission had advertised 1,000 posting posts in July this year for PTE certificate holders to apply.The teachers worked on a pay scale of 34,955 per month started at grade C2 on completion of the stipulated three years in the career as posted Progress Guidelines for Teachers (CPG) to come to Grade C3.
At least 60,000 high school teachers will be trained to prepare for the rollout of junior secondary in March and April next year.
