Teachers Service Commission is the body responsible for the following:
~Recruitment and placement of registered teachers,
~appointment of teachers in various institutions,
~Promote and transfer teachers,
~To exercise disciplinary control over teachers.
The commission gives teachers the same terms and conditions of work. TSC has set recruitment requirements for both primary and secondary teachers in Kenya that must be met before one can be employed.
Applicants applying for positions in primary schools are required to have a P1 certificate. Interested candidates should apply to the TSC County Director, in the county where a vacancy has been advertised and submit all relevant academic and professional documents. Successful candidates are posted to serve in any part of the country.
Applicants applying for the posts in secondary schools must be holders of minimum Diploma in Education Certificate.
Interested candidates should apply to the Secretary of the Board of Management of the school where a vacancy has been advertised and submit a copy of the application to the TSC County Director.
Requirements to be employed/recruited by TSC
1. You must be a Kenyan citizen
2. You must be 45 years of age and below
3. You must be registered as a teacher as per Section 23 of the Teachers Service Commission Act 2012. For registration without registration certificate, copy of the payment receipt of the online application / a printout of the payment receipt must be attached.
4. You must have original professional and educational certificates
TSC Recruitment Requirements for P1 Teacher Employment
Primary teachers are usually employed through selection. The following original documents must be carried to the Sub-County Selection Panel during the day of selection;
~National Identity Card.
~CPE/KCPE certificate (including first attempt certificate if a one time test).
~PTE Certificate.
~School/college leaving certificate.
Candidates without academic and professional certificates must show proof of application for confirmation from KNEC and it is the owner of the respective teacher who follow up with KNEC within 14 days.
The Sub County Selection Panel will consist of the following;

~TSC Deputy County Human Resource Officer – Secretary
~All Zonal Curriculum Support Officers – Members
TSC Requirement for Secondary School Teacher
~Secondary school teacher can be either a graduate or a diploma holder
~graduate teacher
~Minimum mean grade of C+ in KCSE and minimum mean grade of C+ in each of the two teaching subjects or minimum 2 theory and 1 assistant pass at ‘A’ level.
~Bachelor of Education Degree with 2 Teaching Subjects
~Bachelor of Science with Education OR Arts Degree with Education with Two Teaching Subjects
~diploma teacher
~Diploma in Education from a recognized Teacher Training Institute
Minimum grade of C+ in KCSE and at least C+ or credit pass in two teaching subjects or minimum 1 theory and 2 subsidiaries at A-level.
Diploma teachers who graduated in 2008 or earlier with a mean grade of Sea Plain and a subject grade of Sea Plain qualify for consideration.
TSC Requirements for Technical Teachers
Applicants must have a minimum mean grade of C+ in KCSE or at least 1 theory and 2 subsidiaries at A-level.
Bachelor of Education Technology Degree (Bed Tech) OR
Bachelor of Science in any relevant technical subject/course
Higher Diploma in Technical Courses
Diploma in Technical Course
Diploma from Kenya Technical Teachers College or Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PDGE) from a recognized University.
For TVET institutes, the applicant must have a minimum higher diploma or degree in technical education.
Applicants with an average grade of C- and have applied for technical subjects at TVET institutions, but have progressed through a certificate, diploma, higher diploma, or degree, qualify for employment at TVET institutions.
Persons with Disabilities – Hearing Impaired and Blind, are recruited for training with average grade C plain and C plain in two teaching subjects, thus eligible for employment.
For applicants trained in special needs education; KSL and Braille are considered as teaching subjects i.e. Biology / KSL, Geography / Braille are therefore eligible for employment.
Candidates whose training is in subjects that are not in the Kenyan curriculum are not eligible for employment, despite having a postgraduate diploma in education and growth.
Applicants with Economics/Accounting, Social Education and Ethics can apply for Business Studies and CRE/IRE vacancies respectively.
Diploma teachers with English/ other subjects qualify for employment as teacher/ literature teacher.
All applicants must have studied two teaching subjects in KCSE except Agriculture, Business Studies, Home Science and Computer. For those who have not studied business studies and computers, they must have obtained a minimum of C+ in Mathematics in KCSE. For those who have not studied Agriculture and Home Science, they should have obtained minimum C+ in Biology in KCSE.
Graduate teachers should have studied a minimum of 8-curricular units in each teaching subject.
Candidates presenting enhancement certificates/transcripts from recognized institutions qualify for employment.
Applicants who were earlier employed under contract and who were terminated due to insufficient units in teaching subjects and have since obtained enhancement certificate are eligible to apply.
Applicants working in other government departments who fulfill the requirements are eligible to apply.
Filing a complaint form to TSC in case of dissatisfaction during the recruitment process
Any candidate who is dissatisfied with the entire exercise of employment should immediately make a complaint in writing to the TSC County Director and a copy should be sent to TSC Headquarters within a period of not more than 7 days following the selection process. TSC County Direct
