Kakamega County has increased the salaries of ECDE teachers by SH.10,000 as it spent more than SH.54 million on chairs and tables for 306 Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centers.
County Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said that teachers with certificate holders whose salary was Sh.8000 have been increased to Sh.10,000, while the salary of certificate holders has been increased by the same amount.
This means that his salary has been increased by Ksh. 10,000 to Sh 18,000. Diploma holders were not left out as their salary has been increased from SH.12,000 to KSH.20,000.
He said, ‘The county government has increased the salary of these teachers from Ksh 8000 to Ksh 16000, who are certificate holders and increased from Ksh 10,000 to 18,000 for diploma holders and from 12,000 to 20,000 for those with degree. ‘ It is part of a service plan enacted to allow teachers to earn the same amount as primary and secondary schools.

According to the governor, the county government has collaborated with the Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB) to print and publish branded teaching and learning materials.
He said that material has been distributed to all ECDE centers and polytechnics.
Overall, the county government spent 49 million shillings on ECDE and 24 million shillings on the county polytechnic, according to the governor.
He said the county has so far spent Ksh 530 million on infrastructure development for ECDE centers. This year, the county government plans to commission 27 newly built ECDE centers at a cost of shillings 94 million.
Elsewhere, the Lamu County Government has launched a mass teacher training program for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE).
The move is aimed at improving the educational quality under the new curriculum.
