Secretary of Ministry for Education Professor George Magoha has taken issue with teachers who want more money from the government.
According to Magoha, no teacher can be fully paid for the excellent work done by him in the class, thus one should not complain about his income.
According to the CS, like teachers, they do not get adequate compensation for their work in the Ministry of Education, and teachers should follow in their footsteps. No one can compensate our teachers. That’s why I should not hear teachers saying that they are not being paid enough. Who do you think is being paid enough?” he posed.
“No one is paying me to work 16 hours a day and so should you,” he said.
Magoha made this statement while releasing the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam results at Mtihani House in Nairobi.
His remarks came after the teachers’ union renewed its call for the TSC to evaluate the salaries of its members.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) is requesting that TSC ensure that the lowest paid teacher earns Ksh 59,424 instead of Ksh34,955 and the highest paid teacher earns Ksh153 instead of Ksh118,242.
KUPPET’s general secretary Akello Misori believes his quest for a pay increase is driven by the country’s high standard of living, which he alleges has pushed most teachers into poverty because of their low wages.
He asked the TSC to evaluate their demands at the earliest, pointing out that the country has already recovered from the Covid-19 economic crisis, thus there is no reason to deny the rise of teachers.
“The Covid-19 argument should no longer be used to deny teachers their deserved pay increases,” said Akello Misori.
