TSC, Teachers Service Commission has set up a new program that will recognize and reward dedicated teachers.
According to TSC, teachers who have made significant improvements in the level of education in the country will be recognized through this year’s Mwalimu Award programme.
According to the commission, at present, a program has been put in place which will look at a standardized criteria and mechanism for rewarding teachers.
The best teachers will be rewarded for their efforts in various categories including academic, sports and extra-curricular activities in which they participated.
During the release of the 2021 KCSE exam results, Teachers Service Commission CEO Dr Nancy Macharia said that the commission will engage with the concerned authorities to examine ways to institutionalize the Mwalimu awards within the existing policy and legal framework.
I am pleased to report that President Uhuru Kenyatta today graciously approved the Commission’s suggestion to establish the Mwalimu Prize to honor outstanding teachers.
“Furthermore, the President has asked the Commission to work with the relevant offices to examine the possibilities of institutionalizing the award within the existing policy and legal framework,” Dr Macharia said.
According to Nancy, the commission will begin the process of recruiting 5,000 teachers as soon as possible to help address the current teacher shortage in schools, with an emphasis on sub-county secondary schools that accept large numbers of pupils.
Dr. Macharia also noted that the government has allocated Ksh 2.5 billion to TSC for permanent teacher recruitment, with an additional Ksh 1.2 billion earmarked for intern hiring.
According to the CEO of TSC, the commission will start the training of CBC secondary teachers on April 25 this year to prepare for the first batch of junior secondary school students in January 2023.
The above training program which ends on 13th May is geared to ensure that all secondary school teachers are equipped with relevant skills to handle junior secondary by the end of the year.
