In order to employ more teachers in Kenya, the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has been asked to cut the salaries of the country’s senior state officials.
Speaking during an interview, constitutional expert and economist John Kirui said the SRC should cut the salaries of the president, vice president, speaker of the Senate and National Assembly, 47 governors and their deputies, and 350 members of parliament. 50 senators.
He explained that if the salaries of the president and his deputies were reduced by 30 per cent, the people of Kenya would save Ksh.600,000 monthly.
He further added that the people of Kenya would save 500,000 monthly, Shs 28 million, Shs 105 million and Shs 15 million if the salaries of the Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate, Governors and their deputies, 350 members of the National Assembly and 50 Senators respectively. 30 percent reduction.
“Kenyan taxpayers will save 30% monthly from the salary reduction, the total amount will be Ksh.490.5 million.
This amount could employ 5,000 teachers in public schools across the country, “he said.
He further added that Kenya should follow the lead of developed countries where state officials receive a fair salary as other funds are put into development projects.
He urged the current government to protect the quality of education in Kenya.
“Many children are hungry for education but there is a great shortage of teachers. The government is putting pressure on teachers by implementing a 100 per cent transition policy, ”he said.
He expressed concern that the quality of education would be compromised if the shortage of teachers was not addressed.
