A student has been shot dead after mistaking her boyfriend’s house with a police officer’s house.
After the shot, the victim fell to the ground and screamed for help, claiming that she was not a thief. She specifically mentioned the name of Bandishe Ashraf, one of the tenants living in the suspect’s residence.
The house manager responded to the scene along with other neighbors. Subsequently, the police officer also came out of his house, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesgyire said.
Nagayi was in the company of her boyfriend Ashraf Bandish when they were dating, police said. Ashraf gave her a key to enter the residence and rest while he stayed.
However, she mistakenly tried to open the officer’s house, which is opposite Ashraf’s room, leading to the unfortunate firing, ASP Owoyesgyire added.
ASP Tebangole is currently in police custody while Nagayi is hospitalized at Kawolo General Hospital in Buikwe District.
A pistol with 12 bullets was recovered from the policeman who shot the victim. A friend of the victim told reporters that this was the first time Nagayi had entered his rented apartments.
The boyfriend said his girlfriend went to his apartment for the first time after staying out well past the recommended university hours. She lives in a university hall that closes at midnight so she asked me for my house keys to go rest because I was still drinking. I directed her and the boda boda guy to the purple apartments, but they went to the wrong place.
