TSC introduces new allowances for teachers.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has introduced new allowances for teachers teaching in special schools to attract and retain them in institutions.
This statement was made by the head of the TSC, Dr. Nancy Macharia before the Cohesion and Equal Opportunities Committee.
Macharia further informed the committee that special schools in the country have a teacher shortage of about 5,362.
Mrs Nancy Macharia told the team led by Hon Adan Haji that the readers’ support allowance was introduced for teachers who are blind, deaf and also physically challenged.
Macharia said special school allowances are also another incentive for teachers with special teaching skills.
According to the TSC, apart from standard allowances such as hardship allowances and commuting allowances, among others, incentives are one way to recognize the other challenges teachers face.
The TSC CEO further explained that the commission recruited and deployed 1,763 teachers to schools in May to address the shortage of teachers.
Macharia added that 3,600 more teachers will be added to schools this September and also in January and June next year.
Following budget constraints, TSC developed a staggered deployment of teachers to special schools to cope with the shortage.
Macharia added that the Commission also developed and implemented a unique staffing standard so that schools with special educational needs.
The TSC CEO said class sizes determined by the type and severity of students’ disabilities are considered for each teacher.
