The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) plans to recruit 20,000 intern teachers from October this year. The commission will employ 18,000 intern high school teachers and 2,000 intern primary school teachers.
Dr. Belio Kipsang, the Principal Secretary of Education (PS) for Basic Education, reports that to ensure the success of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), 56,000 Teachers have been hired, with plans to hire another 20,000 to strengthen the program.
According to PS, 18,000 classrooms will be built by the government in January next year to accommodate the 9th classes. He went on to say that while 7,000 classrooms are being developed through CDF, 11,000 classrooms are being developed with the help of development partners.
The government, is fully committed to the success of the CBC and is working with all partners to put in place the necessary infrastructure.
All arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth transition from Grade 9 to grade 10 in 2026.
The TSC will also confirm the permanent and pension terms of a total of 46,000 teachers currently on internship.
The commission was allocated Sh18.7 billion for the financial year. The conversion will take place in January 2025.
Teachers will receive internship certificates at the end of their contract. The certificates allow them to get more points during the recruitment interview.
Earlier this month, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia said intern teachers will start receiving new salaries from the commission once they receive money to confirm on permanent terms.
According to TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, the extension of intern teachers is aimed at allowing the current batch of trainee teachers to remain in the school until the end of the year, ensuring a smooth transition to the new school year.
Intern Teachers attached to primary schools will receive a monthly salary of 15,000 shillings, while those in Junior Secondary schools will receive 20,000 shillings.
According to the Cabinet Secretary of Education, Julius Ogamba, Sh18.7 billion has already been released to confirm 46,000 trainee teachers. He added that Sh13.5 billion has been released to implement Phase 2 of the Teachers’ Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
