Police are investigating an incident in which a soldier based in Gilgil was attacked and killed by unknown assailants in Endebess.
Police said Corporal James Ojuku Mudongi was traveling with his girlfriend Mercy Chebet when the unknown assailants overtook him.
According to a police report, Mudongi and Chebet boarded a Probox at around 8.30pm on Tuesday in the Oronei area along the Kitale-Endebess road.
While in Maili Nane area, the vehicle left the main road and headed towards TTI road instead of Endebess town. This prompted Mudongi and Chebet to jump out of the moving vehicle and head towards a nearby maize plantation, police said. The police said that the men chased him to the plantation where they attacked the deceased, wounding him in the abdomen and the woman on the thigh, with raw weapons.
They were rescued by two boda boda riders who were passing by. They took them to Kitale District Referral Hospital where the lady was treated and released. The military officer was transferred to the RTS Forces Hospital in Eldoret but was pronounced dead on arrival. The police were informed about the incident by Siriako Mahanga, Mudongi’s brother.
