Karungu Mixed Secondary School in South Mugirango, Kisii County has been partially closed after students failed to report when the school opened for 2023.
County Education Director Henry Onderi confirmed the indefinite closure of the school on Friday, noting that it is not practical to continue operating the school.
According to him, 9 TSC teachers in the school were idle after only one student reported to school.
The School’s board of management was immediately dismissed by the Director of Education for failing to manage the school.
The director said the school would be temporarily closed and the children there would be transferred to a nearby school.
The director said it did not make sense to continue running the school, as only one student reported against the nine teachers present.
He said the low enrollment in Kenya’s secondary education is one of the factors preventing parents from taking their children to special schools.
He stressed that he was aware of cases of parents taking up arms against school principals protesting poor results. However, said parents have an important role in improving school performance.
“Performance at school will never be the result of one person. As a parent, what role do you play in supporting the school to achieve the desired results? He stopped.
