There was panic at Busia Stadium yesterday Thursday, March 24, after a university student collapsed and died during a police recruitment exercise.
Twenty-six-year-old Johnston Elizah Ochieng collapsed after finishing four laps, was taken to the nearby Busia Referral Hospital hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Speaking to Daily Nation, the deceased’s brother Otieno said that the student had trained for a week before participating in a rigorous exercise in a police recruitment drive.
“My brother prepared well for the recruitment. He has been training since last one week. I was with him yesterday and in the morning I came here to give him moral support.”
He said that after the third lap, his brother’s pace started slowing and after the end of four rounds, he could hardly walk.
The victim said that the police doctors tried to give first aid but his condition did not improve.
