His death was announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta during a press briefing at the State House Nairobi at noon on Friday, April 22.
Uhuru announced that Kibaki died on the night of Thursday, April 21.
The president mourned his predecessor as a leader who promoted the country’s economic development, democracy and supported the welfare of all Kenyans.
Uhuru remembers him for his role in overseeing the receipt and implementation of Kenya’s constitution in 2010.
Kibaki served as the third President of Kenya between 2002 and 2013.
Uhuru announced that a period of mourning will follow from today in remembrance of the late Kibaki.
He said all Kenyan flags in all public buildings, ministries and missions around the world would be flown at half-mast until the day he will be buried.
“The nation will observe a national mourning period from today until the day that the president will be buried,” he said.
In addition, Uhuru announced that the late Kibaki would be given a state funeral.
