Maseno University student shot dead during Azimio protests
A Maseno University student was shot dead during an anti-government protest in the area on Monday morning, injuring six police officers.
The third-year student was shot in the neck around 5 p.m.
The student joined other Azimio la Umoja protesters after a call from its leader.
According to a police report, Sairam supermarket in Maseno town and other business premises along the Kisumu-Busia road were attacked during the protests.
The report further stated that they went ahead and lit fires and barricaded stones along the road.
After some time, the students started throwing stones at the police line where they damaged the window panes of ten houses and the police station.
It further indicated that protesters overpowered officers manning the station after police ran out of tear gas canisters and blank rounds.
The report said that six police officers were injured in the protest.
“This prompted policemen who were dispatched to quell the intruders to fire live bullets. Subsequently, the 3rd year student was hit in the neck,” the police report said.
He was taken to Coptic Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
