Form 1 registration begins today, Wednesday, but the students are yet to receive the benefit of the scholarship.
Parents who had hoped for a scholarship will now have to find alternative ways to raise money.
The Elimu Scholarship has benefited 18,000 students and will benefit 9,000 more students this year.
Education CS George Magoha said 4,000 slots would be reserved for students in the slums.
“The aim is to enable learners to break the ceiling and free their families from inhumane urban poverty,” he said.
Orphans and students with special needs who have scored less than 280 marks may be considered.
Scholarships provide transportation, school fees, school kits and pocket money to and from school for four years.
Magoha warned school heads against compulsory parents to pay full school fees.
But schools are still asking parents to pay first term school fees before receiving their calling letter.
The admission letter states, “School fees should be paid before admission, either in a banker’s check or in a school account.”
Equity Group will sponsor 2,000 Wings to Fly Scholars for the 2022-23 Form 1 selection cycle at a cost of Sh2 billion for their entire secondary school education.
This year’s Wings to Fly Scholarship application and selection process will benefit 1,000 students.
The government has allocated shs 2 billion for free primary education and another shs 1 billion for free day secondary education. 16.9 billion.
This is the fifth batch of 100 per cent transition to secondary school, Magoha said, adding that they will mop-up students just like last year.
Last year, CS went to the slums to select students who missed out on admission due to lack of money.
