Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers’ compensation structure proposed by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has been opposed by the Kenya Union of Pre-Primary Education Teachers (KUNOPPET).
They have claims that they were not consulted.
SRC had developed an advisory on new job evaluation, grading, as well as compensation structures for ECDE teachers and sent it to COG chairman Hon. Martin Wambora in a letter dated December 10, 2021.
The letter signed by SRC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mrs. Anne Gitau indicated that following the deliberations in the various consultative meetings with relevant stakeholders and the challenges observed in matters of funding and remuneration for the ECDE Teachers at the county government, the Commission has developed a salary structure for the ECDE cadres (Diploma and Certificate levels) based on the results of the job evaluation.
The KUNOPPET As ECDE stakeholders, Secretary General Samuel Opiyo asserted that SRC ought to have contacted them before developing the salary structure advisory.
Now that SRC payments are less than the minimum gazetted wage, he praised the county governments for ignoring them.
Any certificate holder (entry level) qualified as an Assistant ECDE Teacher III should make Ksh7,836 on the minimum and Ksh8,717 on the maximum as their basic monthly income, according to the SRC advisory but this is opposite to the minimum gazetted wage for an unskilled casual worker is Ksh 15,000 per month.
In addition, the SRC advises diploma holders (Senior ECDE Teachers I) with 15 years of experience to make between Ksh 15,224 and Ksh 19,064 in salary.
