In relation to the demands that parents presented to the President William Ruto, there has been a rise in the number of people advocating for the suspension of the Competency-Based Curriculum.
Parents all over the country asked the President to suspend the implementation of CBC in January 2023, before the Presidential Working Party could finish its work.
According to parents’ feedback, the recently implemented curriculum lacks clear structures and should be revised before being reintroduced.
Bungoma county parent Benard Wafula said that he was concerned about the lack of communication between those involved in education since it would slow down the process of implementing the curriculum.
The curriculum was forced on parents, teachers, and learners by the government, but I believe it can work if rolled out smoothly with all stakeholders on board,” he stated.
The demands of the parents were also supported by a number of the teachers, who were of the opinion that an early suspension would assist the government in finding other options.
Patrick Were, secretary of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Homa Bay branch, emphasized that if improvements were not implemented soon, pupils would suffer more.
“We are glad that Ruto’s government has given us an opportunity, to tell the truth about this curriculum.
“Our position is that the CBC should be suspended as soon as possible until Ruto decides whether to scrap it or continue. Were complained that in its current form, the system was harmful to educators, parents, and students.
The CBC task team has spread out around the country to hear people’s opinions on the new curriculum instituted by the government of former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
There was still some doubt regarding the Grade Six tests that were supposed to take place in the middle of November 2022, despite the fact that there were requests for the curriculum to be put on hold.
In addition, candidates would be required to take national examinations during the months of November and December 2022.
The team led by Professor Raphael Munavu was supposed to hand in their final report and recommendations to Ruto in March of 2023.
There was an additional requirement that it give an update to Ruto every two months on its progress.
