Baringo County will recruit and confirm 1,588 ECDE teachers on a permanent basis.
The Baringo County Government has announced preparations to confirm 1,588 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers on a permanent and pensionable (PNP) basis.
This policy change is part of a wider initiative to strengthen the county’s ECDE sector.
During a review meeting held at the Lelian ECDE Center in Baringo Central sub-county, the Head of Education and Vocational Training, Joseph Wahiaro, expressed confidence in the preparation and expertise of teachers to implement the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). He also emphasized that Special Needs Education (SNE) teachers will be involved in recruitment, ensuring that the diverse needs of all students are met.
Wahiaro acknowledged several challenges in the ECDE sector, particularly the lack of teaching and learning resources.
However, he noted that the county administration has made significant progress in addressing this problem, providing some of the necessary equipment to ensure smoother operations.
He also highlighted the inadequacy of infrastructure in some centres, especially in Tiaty constituency, and assured the public that support to these areas will be provided once teacher confirmations are finalised.
Regarding teacher contracts, the county government has introduced differentiated policies for specific groups. Wahiaro said that 326 ECDE teachers over the age of 50 will be retained on contract, with remuneration, while 178 untrained teachers will be given one-year contracts.
This approach aims to retain experienced educators while balancing resources and training needs. To facilitate the planned reforms, Baringo County is working together with 30 ward coordinators and directors of education from all the sub-counties.
The county hopes that these reforms will result in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Services Commission, strengthening collaborative efforts to renew the ECDE sector and provide a coherent framework for its development
