The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has provided Junior Secondary School Intern Teachers (JSS) recruited in November 2024 with confirmation of their permanent and pensionable (PnP) terms after one year of service.
This assurance was given by TSC officials during the induction of 20,000 JSS intern teachers who commenced work on January 6, 2025. TSC county and sub-county Directors, Human Resources Officers and Programme Support Officers conducted the induction sessions at the sub-county premises.
The officials encouraged teachers to remain committed as the Commission works towards the transition to PnP conditions. The sessions covered the TSC Code of Conduct and Ethics for Teachers, Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD), leave policies and other professional expectations.
In January 2025, TSC converted 46,000 probationary teachers into permanent contracts, marking the largest transition of its kind.
The latest conversions include 21,550 JSS teachers and 4,000 primary school teachers recruited in February 2023, 450 secondary school teachers recruited in April 2023, and 18,000 JSS teachers and 2,000 primary school teachers recruited in September 2023.
Once confirmed, teachers receive improved salaries and access to comprehensive medical coverage, various types of leave and credits.
Primary school teachers now earn a net salary of KSh 32,000 after deductions, while qualified secondary school teachers, including those in hardship areas, earn up to KSh 47,526. In contrast, intern teachers previously earned KSh 13,000 for primary school and KSh 17,000 for secondary school after statutory deductions. TSC gives 50 points to teachers with practical experience on the recruitment mark sheet, virtually guaranteeing their confirmation.
The 20,000 JSS teachers will also benefit from a redesign of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency Based Assessment (CBA) as part of their professional development.
TSC plans to pay the arrears of JSS trainee teachers by February 2025 following errors in the online submission process of accident data by school principals.
The Teachers Internship Programme is designed as a one-year initiative to provide registered and unemployed teachers with practical teaching experience through mentoring and coaching. Although the standard length of an internship is 12 months, the majority of the 46,000 teachers who have chosen PnP complete their internship within two years. The completion of the internship program allows participants to earn a certificate, thereby enhancing their teaching qualifications and career prospects.
