On Monday, June 20, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) George Magoha said that the first class of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) will continue in primary schools even after completing the national exam that will qualify them for junior secondary school in 2023.
Prof .Magoha, while speaking to the media at the Moi Educational Centre, assuaged parents’ concerns about private schools’ readiness to accommodate the first batch of Grade Six graduates as boarders in junior secondary schools.
CS Magoha claimed that parents were not need to transfer their children to different institutions, and that the competition should be held when they are looking to enroll in senior secondary schools in Grade 10.
As per to Magoha,it is critical for parents who already have their children enrolled in private schools to have them enrolled in junior secondary facilities inside those institutions so that the cutthroat rivalry that occurs after year eight is postponed to Year 10,” he remarked
“It’s just an extra year,” Magoha explained, “so they’ll be a little older than usual when they start competing for senior school now.”
Prof Magoha also questioned the idea that the CBC meant that pupils entered secondary schools at an early age and that teachers were unprepared to deal with them. In the 8-4-4 system, he said, some secondary schools had admitted kids as young as 12 years old.
The Education CS stated that building of CBC classrooms in public schools was underway, with 1,296 of the 5,000 already completed. He went on to say that he would make sure that all of the classrooms were finished before the government handed them back to the primary schools.
He also added his two cents on the current threat of politicians seeking political office presenting invalid degree credentials for clearance to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Finally Magoha also warned politicians that no court would grant them degrees, and that colleges have the authority to check degrees. The procedure of certifying academic credentials, according to the CS, should be simple but is only complicated by politics.
