The multi-agency team caught a student of Zetech University, who was allegedly selling fake Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam papers.
The suspect was led into a trap, which removed him from his hideout in an operation led by undercover agents affiliated with the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and others associated with the Monitoring and Surveillance Unit.
The Surveillance and Surveillance Unit is a division of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) located at Kiambu Road.
After his arrest, the detectives confiscated several fake exam papers and others in the form of soft copies kept in his mobile phone.
According to the DCI, the suspect allegedly set up several social media pages, including WhatsApp groups, where he sold exam papers to unsuspecting students.
“The suspect was charging them Ksh2,600 for the science paper and Ksh1,600 for the humanities,” the agency’s statement partially read.
He was immediately taken into custody and would be charged with examination misconduct when he appears in court.
“The suspect violated section 28 of the National Examination Misconduct Act 29, 2012,” the DCI said.
Government’s warning to teachers on KCSE, KCPE exam leak
His arrest came a day after the KCPE exam was over. While assuring the parents and teachers of the validity of the exams, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said the government is vigilant to ensure that the exams are not tainted.
“I want to confirm to you this morning that the test has not leaked and the first test will be seen after leaving the container,” Magoha said.
He further added, “There are some miscreants who are still trying to leak the paper; If you are stupid and want to buy papers, go and buy. But I want to confirm to you that you will not buy our test.”
He also warned teachers against leaking exam question papers, threatening penal action against those found guilty. During the recently concluded KCPE examination, three persons were arrested on charges of malpractice in the examination.
Candidates for KCSE will start their exam on Monday 14th March.
