Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has issued a new directive to parents and local education authorities that all students who have performed well but are unable to enroll in secondary schools of their choice should enroll in immediate standard schools.
On Saturday, May 21, CS spoke in Isinya, Kajiado County, arguing that the lack of school fees should not be a barrier to parents enrolling their children in high schools.
He suggested that if parents could not afford to send their children to boarding school, they should send them to nearby schools.
He also announced that the state daily provides free education in secondary schools and urged parents to take advantage of it.
He also directed the education officials of the constituency to conduct a mop-up exercise to ensure that all the students are enrolled in secondary schools.
The CS claimed that some parents refused to send their children to school because they lacked school fees.
“All education officials should gather all the students and take them to nearby schools as they are completely free, the government has arranged free secondary education and all the needs of the child are equal,” he said.
This comes just a week after education stakeholders expressed concern over the large number of students who are yet to register in Form One, despite the government’s 100% transition policy.
On May 15, some parents protested the high cost of education in the country, alleging that principals were making unreasonable demands, including raising school fees.
Magoha, on the other hand, promised that the ministry would start a mop-up exercise on Monday, May 16, to ensure that no student was left behind.
“We still have a large number of students who have yet to report. I think we can say that the time is not over yet because we are starting the exercise on Monday, “CSA admitted at the time.
Since 2019, the Ministry of Education has pushed for a full transition but has repeatedly fallen short of that mark.
