Nakuru High School has been closed indefinitely after students unrest. Nakuru High School has been entirely closed after students organized a violent protest on Sunday, 9 February. There have been some complaints, mainly centered on dissatisfaction with the food given to the school.
Reports showing that the demonstration started at about 8:50 p.m. and continued for at least six hours. The law enforcement officers were finally called to suppress the situation and restore order.
Before the authority intervention, students vandalised different facilities, including the administration block, classes and dorms. Also, they forcefully accessed the dining hall and storage room, where they stole food. Some students immediately consumed the stolen food, according to reports.
It was found that dissatisfaction was compared to remove a dish in the schedule of each day. The students, who were used to eating tea and bread in the middle of the morning, express their dissatisfaction after administration removed the meal.
They also protested against the newly introduced card system to buy items in school canteen because they prefer money transactions.
Another main complaint was the decision of administration to withdraw the morning tea’s milk, which students feel ignored by.
They were also frustrated by the delay in upgrading the entertainment facilities, despite making a little contribution towards it.
After the prolonged standoff, peace was finally restored with the police intervention and Nakuru County Director of Education (CDE), Victoria Mulili.
By Monday, February 10, the students were sent home. Reports suggest that the institution can be closed for at least a week.
