Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha, according to Dr. Mwakima, has modified a widely reported directive concerning Junior Secondary admissions under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The CS mandated that all existing day and boarding secondary schools admit pupils transitioning to Junior Secondary School in a statement made on Wednesday, May 11.
He also mentioned that the ministry had designated 1,500 primary schools to house extra students progressing to Grade 7.
In 2023, the first cohort of CBC students transitioning from Grade 6 to Grade 7 will be affected by the change. during
“Education Ministry wishes to clarify that junior Secondary schools will be offered in both boarding and day secondary schools across the country under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“All the existing boarding and day secondary schools will admit learners transiting from Grade 6 to Grade 7 under CBC based on guidelines to be provided by the Ministry.
“The Ministry has identified 1,500 primary schools that will host junior secondary schools because they have adequate learning and teaching facilities and land for physical expansion,” read the statement in part.
Some of these elementary schools will be expanded in the future to include a full secondary wing.
Following widespread allegations that the ministry was only willing to admit all Grade 7 students to day secondary schools, the directive was issued.
As the state worked to solve the dormitory space problem, Deputy Director for Secondary Education Lawrence Karundi suggested that pupils would be housed in day schools near them.
The problem is exacerbated by the fact that current Class 8 students will be moving to high school using the old curriculum.
“When it comes to the issue of dormitories, especially with the junior secondary, our focus is that this should be a day school, not boarding.
“The transition will be in such a way that students join schools within where they are now, therefore, boarding may not be necessary,” Karundi stated.
Students will be assigned to Junior Secondary Schools based on their academic performance, selected disciplines, and capacity to attend day schools.
Math, English, Kiswahili, Integrated Sciences, and Creative and Social Sciences will be among the five courses tested.
