Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has disclosed good news for both unemployed teachers and teachers seeking promotion.
Thousands of trained teachers are yet to be absorbed by TSC, while many others have stayed in the same job grade for years and are seeking promotion.
For example in the last year over 300,000 teachers applied for only 11,000 teaching slots that were advertised in July mass recruitment. This is a clear indication that many trained teachers are desperate for TSC jobs.
The number of unemployed teachers is increasing year by year because TSC is not able to absorb all the trained teachers at the graduation level at once.
The double transition coming next year has raised much concern about the teacher burden, which is grappling with teacher shortages in most secondary schools in the country.
The Teachers Service Commission is making a strategy for the coming shortage of teachers. The commission has revealed that there are plans to hire teachers and promote others once the funds are received.
The People Daily has revealed that TSC’s chief executive, Dr. Macharia, speaking in front of lawmakers yesterday, said the commission needed 10 billion for staffing. According to Dr. Macharia of 10 billion, the commission needs 8,000 teachers and 5.3 billion to recruit. 1.2 billion to recruit 6,000 interns.
This brings the total to 14,000 teachers who can be employed in the upcoming mass recruitment. He also said that 2 billion people would be required for the promotion of teachers on a competitive basis and the remaining amount would go to other issues like evaluation.
He further informed that funds are required for teacher counseling and coaching and roll out of biometric teacher registration.
“The teacher membership and coaching program would reasonably require Ksh 50 million, while Ksh 342.4 million would require national biometric enrollment and verification of tutors,” said the TSC CEO.
