A 34-year-old man died on Friday after he got trapped inside a boiler at an established steel manufacturing factory in Thika, Kiambu County.
Caleb Otieno, the second born in his family working in the boiler section, was liquefied, leaving the family and fellow workers in disbelief and grief.
According to his brother John Agwambo, Otieno, who has worked at the company for at least seven years, was doing his normal job in an open boiler when one of the gloves he was wearing got stuck in the metal, which He was pushing into the boiler.
Agwambo said, “We were told that he must have been trapped and fell into the boiler and the body could not be found because the temperature is usually too high and the body is already liquefied and so we need to be buried.” Can’t even get anything for it.”
No part of Otieno’s body was recovered as his entire body was dismembered and mixed with boiler fluids.
The brother of the deceased questioned the report released by the company saying that a lot of mysteries revolve around the disappearance of their relatives.
“HR wametuambia tukuje Monday but so far we feel like they are taking us under siege. We have tried to inquire about a lot of things but it seems they are hiding something…
Otieno’s family now wants the government to intervene so that justice can be done.
He also urged the government to take action on the industries to find out whether the safety concerns for the workers are maintained or not.
“What we want is justice for the family that has lost their second son. He was the earner,” said a family member.
“…we are losing lives in these industries, due to lack of security is not good. Government should intervene and enforce law on all companies to ensure safety and security.
