The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched Kenya’s first live streaming of lessons program, through which teachers from top schools will simultaneously teach multiple classes from different schools.
The programme, which will run as a pilot for two months, will initially target two students before the national rollout, and will focus on five subjects – mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry and English.
Two major schools – Machakos Boys High School and Alliance Girls High School – will participate in pilot and beam lessons in five satellite schools.
With the launch of the programme, students of the connected schools will be able to enjoy a variety of teaching and learning activities which will be live streamed on the screens by the teachers of the principal schools in their classrooms.
Lessons will also be interactive, as students from satellite schools will have the opportunity to comment and ask questions via video links.
The schools that will be linked to Machakos Boys High School are Isiolo Girls in Isiolo, Colin Davis Mixed Secondary in Loitokitok, Kajiado, AIC Kawalula Secondary in Kitui, Njoro Secondary in Tata Taveta and Mithingini Girls in Makueni. The Alliance Girls High in Kiambu will teach Kipkurr Mixed to Bishop Baldachino Secondary Schools in Bomet, Kiwandani and Kilifi, Kurongurik Secondary School in Narok, and Suguta Girls Secondary in Kisii.
Speaking during the launch of the Live Streaming program at Alliance Girls High School on January 26, 2022, Dr. Nancy Macharia, Chief Executive Officer, TSC, said that the prolonged closure of schools in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic has affected teachers. highlighted the need. “To support teachers in enhancing ICT and distance learning skills, the Commission has developed a manual to guide the use of technology for teaching and learning,” she said: “As a Commission, we envisions a future where blended education will be the order of the day to ensure high quality of teaching and learning.”
Dr Macharia assured the nation that technology will not render teachers jobless, adding that the industry is only leveraging technology to bridge the existing gap. He said that so far 163,938 teachers have been trained on distance education methods.
The launch was attended by key education stakeholders including top leaders from KNUT, KUPPET, KESSHA and KEPSHA. Speakers at the event described this initiative as a game changer which will make learning competitive and provide a platform on which talents and resources can be shared.
