Schools will resume as planned, despite teacher strike plans. The Kenyan government has assured citizens that public schools will reopen for the third term on Monday, August 26, as planned.
The announcement follows ongoing negotiations between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and teachers’ unions aimed at preventing a possible strike.
The TSC has initiated discussions with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in response to the unions’ complaints.
These discussions are part of efforts to address concerns raised by teachers and ensure a smooth reopening of schools. At the opening ceremony of the World Skills Kenya competition at TVETS Kenya School in Gigiri, Nairobi, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the teachers’ unions have raised valid issues. He assured that the ministry is committed to responding to all their requests.

Two weeks ago, KNUT and KUPPET published a strike notice, highlighting six key points of their collective agreement.
These issues include the confirmation and terms of employment of high school teachers, which remain critical points of negotiation. The government’s response to these questions will be crucial to avoid the planned strike and to ensure that the school calendar continues without interruption.
