Several people are feared dead after a fuel tanker exploded in the Muhonje area of Kakamega County.
Preliminary reports indicate that the tanker collided with another vehicle before bursting into flames.
The cause of the accident could not be ascertained and the fire could not be brought under control till the time of going to press.
According to the Red Cross, the Red Cross Action Team, police and county government emergency services were deployed.
“Reports of a fuel tanker explosion in the Muhonje area in Kakamega. Red Cross Action Team Kakamega, emergency medical services, police and county fire brigade are responding,” the Red Cross said.
The blast was confirmed by the National Police Service (NPS), who said their officers have been deployed to guard the scene. He advised the motorists to exercise caution while reaching the accident spot.
“We would like to inform the public about a road traffic accident involving a petrol tanker which was engulfed in flames in the Muhonje area near Lavandedi along the Webuye-Eldoret road.
Our officers are on the spot. We urge motorists and spectators to exercise caution. The casualties as a result of the accident are yet to be established,” law enforcement officials said.
The accident happened when a truck carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders exploded a few days ago near Mutarakwa area on Mai Mahiu road.
