Six died in a road accident between Eldoret and Nakuru. At least six people died in a multi-vehicle accident at Migaa area near Salgaa along the Eldoret-Nakuru road.
The bus, which was heading towards Nakuru from Kericho, lost its brakes while the driver was negotiating the steep stretch.
The bus collided with barriers in the stretch and other vehicles in front of it before landing in a ditch.
Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati said a team was on the ground coordinating the rescue mission. Some passengers who survived the accident said the bus was heading to Mombasa.
Police and Red Cross workers are on standby to assist in the rescue mission.
The accident happened around 5 am.
At least 40 people were injured.
“The injured were transported to Molo and Coptic hospitals after a road accident. The Kenya Red Cross, together with a multi-agency response team, is still on the scene to assist,” the Kenya Red Cross said in a statement.
This stretch is common with such fatal accidents and is likely to cause a major traffic that is a busy area. This is the latest incident reported over the weekend.
