A total of 148 female students of Ikonge Girls Secondary School in Nyamira County are currently admitted to various hospitals in Nyamira County with suspected water or food poisoning.
According to Nyamira North Sub-County Director of Education, Clare Oyula, there were reports of students complaining of abdominal and lower abdominal pain.
In a statement, Oyula said these students were taken to Mogumo Health Center and others to Ekerenyo Sub-County Hospital for medication.
According to Oyula, most of the students are in stable condition and will be released.
According to County Health CEC Timothy Ombati, three students who are in a critical condition have been referred to Nyamira County Referral Hospital for specialized treatment.
In a statement, the CEC said they received an emergency call from the school and their team responded in time. He added that the students have been admitted to our various hospitals and are being attended to by medical professionals.
In addition, he said another team of public health officials had been sent to the school to find out what the problem might be.
Mr Ombati said doctors have already taken stool samples from the students and those in health facilities are in stable condition.
He added that three of the students were referred to the main hospital in Nyamira town for specialized medication.
