TSC CEO Nancy Macharia said 5,000 of the 11,000 vacancies would be available for employment, while 6,000 would be for internships.
Macharia said the new recruits will help the commission prepare for junior secondary school in 2023.
Macharia disclosed that in the 2022/2023 financial year, the Treasury allocated KSh 2.5 billion which will be used to recruit more teachers.
The Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has announced 11,000 vacancies in the form of Merit-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Of the vacancies, Nancy Macharia, the commission’s chief executive officer (CEO), said 5,000 positions would be available for employment, while 6,000 would be available for internships.
Speaking on Saturday, April 23, Macharia said the new recruits would help the commission prepare for junior secondary school in 2023.
She added that most of the new teachers and interns will be deployed in sub-county schools that serve a large number of students.
“During the next recruitment, we will place more emphasis on staffing sub-county secondary schools, which admit most learners,” she said.
In his further statement, Macharia disclosed that in the financial year 2022/2023, the Treasury had allocated KSh 2.5 billion which would be used to recruit more teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.
Another KSh 1.2 billion were set aside to recruit more interns which would help address the shortage of teachers which is currently 114,581.
In other news, the 2022 academic calendar is out.
The calendar marks a difficult time for teachers and students to cover the curriculum as the academic year has been shortened throughout the month.
Schools will reopen on April 25 and close on July 1. There will be a half-term break from May 26 to May 29.
Students and teachers will go on a one-week break from July 2 to July 10. This period is 10 weeks for all students and alumni.
After the first term, for the second term, from July 11 to September 16, schools are expected to resume in two weeks.
During Term Two, which also includes 10 weeks, there will be a one-week interval from 6 to 13 August so that the general election will be held on 9 August.
