TSC has officially scheduled a five-day retooling program for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers, set to begin on April 5, 2025. This initiative is designed to enhance educators’ proficiency in implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Assessment (CBA).
With a structured training model, the program aims to equip teachers with advanced pedagogical skills, ensuring a seamless transition into the evolving education system.
The retooling exercise, organized by the TSC in collaboration with key educational agencies, will adopt the Smart Cascade training model. This model follows a hierarchical training approach, ensuring that Master Trainers pass down knowledge to Trainers of Trainers (ToTs), who then facilitate sessions for JSS teachers.
Below are the training dates:
April 9–11, 2025 : Training of Master Trainers at Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE). Participants will include representatives from TSC, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), and other education bodies.
– April 16–18, 2025 : Face-to-face training of Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) at county-selected venues.
– April 19, 2025 : Coordination of training sessions at sub-county and zonal levels.
– April 21–25, 2025 : Final phase, where JSS teachers undergo subject-specific retooling at designated venues.
As Kenya transitions fully into the CBC, this training is crucial in aligning teachers with new methodologies required to nurture learners’ competencies. The retooling program is expected to:
1. Strengthen Teachers’ Understanding of CBC: Teachers will receive specialized training to improve their approach in facilitating competency-based learning.
2. Enhance Classroom Delivery: Equipping teachers with modern teaching strategies will enhance lesson planning and student engagement.
3. Ensure Uniformity in CBC Implementation: Standardized training ensures that all JSS teachers nationwide adhere to CBC requirements effectively.
4. Improve Student Performance: When teachers are well-trained, they can provide quality education that directly benefits students.
The retooling program will specifically target teachers recruited in November and December 2024 under both the regular and Special Needs Education (SNE) categories. Participants will be grouped according to subject specialization, including:
– Languages (English, Kiswahili, Kenya Sign Language)
– Mathematics
– Sciences (Integrated Science, Health Education)
– Humanities (Social Studies, Religious Education, Life Skills)
– Technical Subjects (Pre-Technical Studies, Agriculture, Nutrition, Creative Arts, and Sports)
The training will be conducted in-person using a multi-agency approach, ensuring that experts from various institutions offer guidance. Other critical logistics include:
– Accommodation: Residential training for teachers from Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) and SNE institutions, while non-ASAL teachers will attend non-residential sessions.
– Venues: The primary training locations will be Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and other designated county venues.
– Support System: Master Trainers will oversee the training process, offering ongoing professional support to teachers.
TSC has directed its regional and county directors to play a pivotal role in the training’s success by:
– Coordinating the entire training process at their respective levels.
– Ensuring the availability of adequate training venues.
– Officially inviting selected teachers to attend the program.
With the continued rollout of CBC, this retooling initiative is a proactive step toward ensuring all JSS teachers are well-equipped to deliver quality education. Educators are encouraged to actively participate in the training to boost their competency and readiness for the changing educational landscape.
