Bad news for teachers as TSC take a big decision regarding KUPPET strike notice. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has refused to hike the salaries of tutors, as demanded by their unions, setting the stage for another round of confrontations that could lead to strikes.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha, meanwhile, has put on a brave face and warned against any industrial action that would disrupt the national examinations that start next week. The Kenya Union of Post-primary Education Teachers (KUPPET ), in a letter to TSC, said it would consult other government agencies and then respond to their request for a pay hike. Big blow for teachers
The union on Wednesday gave TSC seven days to make a counter offer to start talks. It warned that “the consequences of remaining options could be dire.” KUPPET and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) want TSC to postpone the non-monetary collective bargaining agreement (CBA) signed last year and increase teachers. “As you know, the 2022 academic year is very delicate with two national exams scheduled for April and November. In addition, various assessments for grades three, four, five and six are due during the year.
For this, all stakeholders, especially our social partners, must focus on this national exercise to ensure a seamless transition. Any activity that may impede learning should be avoided at all costs,” TSC said in the letter signed by Mr. Cavin Anyour, director of legal affairs, labor and industrial relations.
He was responding to demands made by KUPPET’s general secretary Akello Misori. Should teachers do well on their threat, it will affect exam preparation and administration.
