6, 000 P1 teachers will be deployed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to teach at junior secondary schools beginning in January 2023, indicating that the meeting between TSC officials and teachers union representatives was successful.
This comes after TSC officials discussed the matter with Teachers Union representatives. Conversations are currently taking place between the commission and representatives of the Kenya National Union of Teachers, KNUT, led by its secretary-general Colins Oyuu.
According to TSC, the Junior Secondary School will soon be implemented, and more primary school teachers will need to be sent to teach in the junior secondary schools.
According to TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia, since a competency-based curriculum will also be adopted and more secondary school teachers will be needed, it is necessary to employ primary school teachers in junior secondary.
In order to accomplish the whole transition in schools, Dr. Macharia noted that at least 6000 primary school teachers will be deployed in the first few months. A second cohort will be sent to junior secondary after the CBC has been fully implemented, which is expected to happen in June of next year.
Teachers must adhere to certain standards in order to be sent to secondary schools, according to TSC. KNUT is lobbying TSC to let primary school teachers who earned a degree in the secondary option but just a C in the KCSE teach in the junior high level.
According to Macharia, the commission ended the scheme of automatic promotions on January 9, 2014 since the number of teachers earning higher degrees increased and made it unsustainable.
Members of Parliament (MPs) have petitioned TSC to permit promotions and deployments for teachers with a KCSE mean grade of C (plain) or lower who had earned diplomas, postgraduate degrees, and diplomas from numerous reputable educational institutions.
After July, the commission will only consider PTE teachers for promotions who received a C+ (plus) on the KCSE.
