The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a plan to place primary school teachers in special and junior secondary schools across the country by the end of the month. This measure aims to address the shortage of teachers.
TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia recently informed the Cohesion and Equal Opportunities Committee that there was a surplus of 18,057 primary school teachers.
This surplus is the result of the introduction of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), which led to the removal of grades 7 and 8. The commission plans to solve this problem by sending some of these teachers to other regions.
Dr. Macharia disclosed that TSC intends to deploy 3,600 primary and secondary school teachers to serve in schools and specialized units.
It is part of a progressive plan to address the shortage of teachers in special schools. The placement process will continue in January and June next year. Teachers with degrees and licenses in special education are the primary target of this mission. Due to budget constraints, the implementation will be done in phases. The commission aims to fill a shortage of 5,362 teachers in special schools.
In May 2024, TSC had already hired and placed 1763 teachers in these institutions. Primary school teachers with a degree in SNE will be assigned to schools and specialized units based on their areas of expertise.
TSC has identified a need for 70,000 teachers to manage grades 7, 8 and 9 in high schools. To meet this demand, the Commission is preparing to deploy more than 20,000 Primary School Teachers (PTE), with diplomas and licenses in various fields related to education.
TSC has established the following criteria for the promotion and placement of teachers based on their current qualifications and grades:
*Teacher Grade* – B5 & C1
