The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) of Kenya is set to start recruiting 18,000 secondary school teachers in September. An official recruitment advertisement is expected soon after the swearing in of the new CS Education, Julius Ogamba, and CS Treasury John Mbadi.
The recruitment is part of the Appropriations Amendment Bill (No. 2) of 2024, recently signed into law by President William Ruto, which also includes the confirmation of 46,000 serving trainees on a permanent basis. The original plan to hire new interns and confirm existing ones in July was delayed due to budget constraints after the 2024 Finance Act was repealed.
Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang, highlighted that 56,000 teachers have so far been recruited to support the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). This financial year, the government plans to hire 18,000 interns in junior high schools and 2,000 interns in primary schools.
In addition, the government is building 18,000 classrooms for Grade 9 students next January, with 11,000 classrooms being developed with the support of development partners and 7,000 through CDF.
The Teacher Internship Program is a one-year initiative designed to equip and maintain the competencies of new teachers through mentoring, coaching and hands-on teaching experience. Applications for TSC internships will be strictly online.
Eligibility requirements for primary school interns include holding a PTE or DPTE certificate and registration with the TSC. Junior School Interns must have at least a Diploma, C+ in KCSE with C+ in two subjects and be registered with TSC.
During verification/interviews, applicants must provide:
1. Copy of teacher registration certificate or printout from TSC online portal.
2. Copy of National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) ID card (if applicable).
3. Copy of ID or passport.
4. Two passport size color photographs.
5. Copy of National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) card.
6. Copy of Kenya Revenue Authority Personal Identification Number (KRA PIN).
Primary school interns will receive a monthly stipend of Ksh 15,000 while junior school interns will receive Ksh 20,000. Upon successful completion of the internship program, interns will be awarded an internship certificate, which will be taken into account when confirming them to permanent dates.
