Two hostels were gutted in a fire this morning at Ikuu Girls High School in Tharka Nithi.
There were no injuries reported.
The incident happened when the students were attending a church meeting.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Firefighters from Chuka University’s emergency unit were the first to respond to the incident, with reports indicating the truck was empty and could not remedy the situation.
In the wake of several fires in schools last year, education CS George Magoha warned that school arsonists would face severe punishment, adding that their actions would be updated not only in their profiles, but during school life. And later also they will be harassed.
“It seems mundane and juvenile for someone who is in high school to burn down a dorm. What has the building done to you? Let us not pretend that they are burning the hostel due to corona stress, this is not true,” Magoha resented.
The CS accused the teachers and school heads of negligence and said that they should make good use of technology in combating this evil.
“My charge to you teachers is this: What the hell is all this that students were in a classroom and a hostel caught fire, yet you all have CCTV with a manned command center? This is primitive and should be stopped. We are not closing any schools,” said Magoha
Prof Magoha said that in many incidents of fire across the country, teachers have been reporting that they do not know the cause of the fire, yet they are entrusted with the day-to-day running of the institutions.
“The role of teachers is to enforce discipline and provide mentoring to learners. Don’t let learners become more intelligent than you,” said Magoha during a meeting with education stakeholders
