West Pokot County Police are looking for ten people accused of assaulting a 12-year-old girl in Sigor after she refused to marry an elderly man.
According to police at Marich police station, last week the girl’s father and others thrashed her for forcing her to marry after giving her ten cows as dowry.
“On Wednesday, a group of men came up to her and thrashed her so that she could accept the marriage,” police said while speaking to the Standard.
According to the police, the minor was then taken to the man’s residence where a festival was held.
After waiting until the men were sufficiently drunk , the minor fled to the police station.
“The group had decided to have fun after the girl got married successfully. According to the minor, she waited for the men to get drunk and fled,” said police.
“We immediately reached the lover’s house, but unfortunately, we found that they had already fled. We are looking for the culprits.”
According to Sigor OCPD Bamfort Surwa, the minor also had to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM).
The suspects are being sought in the case, one of whom is the father.

The residents of Kaigi village informed their chief that the girl had been subjected to female genital mutilation, following which an arrest was made.
Officials say the minor was hacked to death in nearby Kirinyaga County and sent to live with her grandmother in Embu. It was believed that she was being hidden after an illegal act.
