Teachers across the country will receive a pay rise from the end of this month, with increases ranging from Ksh 1,000 to Ksh 3,000, depending on their job groups.
The pay review, originally scheduled to begin in July with the current financial year, has been delayed due to claims of insufficient funds.
Despite a dispute between the two main unions, KNUT and KUPPET, over the strike, the government confirmed that it had secured Ksh 13 billion to fund the salary increase.
*Salary adjustment according to job group*
According to information reviewed by Citizen TV, teachers will see these changes in their basic salaries:
*Category B5 (Entry Level):*
The highest paid teacher, who currently earns Ksh 22,739, now receives Ksh 23,830.
*Grade C2 (Primary School Headteacher):*
A teacher at this level, who currently earns Ksh 45,776, will see his salary increase to Ksh 47,858.
*Grade C5 (primary school headteachers):*
Their maximum salary will increase from Ksh 78,667 to Ksh 79,651.
*Grade D5 (School Principal):*
The highest paid teachers in this grade will adjust their salaries from Ksh 159,534 to Ksh 162,539.
This revision results in a salary increase ranging from Ksh 1,037 for the highest paid to Ksh 3,005 for the highest paid teachers.
Teachers whose job grades are divided into 11 categories are also eligible for various allowances, including:
*Travel allowance:*
Starting from Ksh 4,000 at the entry level to Ksh 16,000 at the highest level.
*Holiday pay:*
Varies between Ksh 4,000 and Ksh 10,000 depending on the work group, paid once a year.
*Hardship allowance:*
Between Ksh 6,600 and Ksh 38,100, depending on the work group and location.
In addition, teachers receive a housing allowance classified into three main categories according to their place of residence:
*Group 1 (Nairobi):’
Housing allowances range from Ksh 6,750 to Ksh 50,000.
*Group 2 (other towns and cities):*
Includes Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret and Nyeri, with compensation ranging from Ksh 4,500 to Ksh 35,000.
*Group 3 (former municipality):*
Housing allowances range from Ksh 3,850 to Ksh 25,000.
The Ministry of Education has assured that funds will be available for August salaries, including arrears accumulated in July 2024.
