More than 100 students from Kaplong Girls High School in Bomet county were rushed to hospital yesterday evening after a fire broke out at the teachers’ quarters razing down fifteen temporary structures leaving students in shock.
Kaplong Mission Hospital medical superintendent Stanley Kiplangat said no student suffered burns or breathing problems. The students who were taken to hospital suffered from shock from the incident as none of them had any injuries.
“Most of the students were treated and discharged from hospital but a few who had other conditions are still Hospitalized for further examination and monitoring.”
The doctor said counsellors had been sent to the school to counsel the students. The students were advised on how to manage and deal with emotions after the unexpected incident before being discharged.
It is suspected that the fire was caused by an electric fault in one of the houses. Members of the public and school staff had a difficult time containing the fire that razed down 15 temporary Structures. The county fire extinguisher had difficulties accessing the area.
Parents crowded the school gate after receiving the news of the incident. They camped for the better part of the day waiting to receive news on how their girls are doing.
